Mexico City -Day 1

We arrived in Mexico City Monday evening after a three hour flight on Aeromexico. The flight was uneventful and fairly smooth so we weren’t completely beat when we arrived at around 18:15 and met up with my classmate for the 45 minute ride to the Radisson Perisur in the south of the city.

Most classmates were already in the bar so we had a drink and a bite and got to bed early since the next day would be a busy one with a three hour boat ride and dinner at our friend’s home. One quick note about this hotel, and we didn’t know it when we checked in, but you must ask for a room on the mountain side. We were given a room on the highway side, on the fourth floor (Room 425) and the noise was horrendous. It feels like 18 wheelers were blasting through the room all night. We were able to change to the mountain side and we were able to get a much better rest.

After a breakfast of fruit we boarded the bus to the canals. The canal boat ride is popular with tourists and with locals and we were told that on the weekends the canals are packed with families enjoying the day out together. Passengers can bring their own food and drinks and our host had stocked the boat with tequila, margarita mix and local beers. Soft drinks were available for the few who chose not to imbibe. There are also boats that come up along side the touring boats to sell trinkets, food freshly prepared and also local beverages for those who didn’t bring their own. Mariachi bands come alongside in their boat and will jump on the touring boats for a price. No idea how much since our friend who lives here handled the transaction.

After the boat ride we had some free time before a bus ride out to our friend’s home for a lively evening of amazing food and company. After our four course dinner, in walked a ten person mariachi band. The surprise had us almost in tears as we didn’t expect such an amazing show.

After a quick ride back to the hotel, we were all ready for bed looking forward to day two of our Mexican adventure.
